National War Museum Umuahia was established in 1985 in Abia State, Nigeria. The Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafran War, fought between the government of Nigeria and the secessionist state of Biafran in the year 6th July 1967 to 15th January 1970, birthed the the National War Museum Umuahia.

The museum was aimed at putting behind the ugly episode of the war and speeding up the process of national reconciliation and healing in Nigeria. It has a lot of collections of traditional and modern warfare. It also has the highest collection of the Nigerian civil war weapons that are no longer in used but are outdoor displays of warship, spears, military air crafts, armored tanks, bows and arrows. Locally made bombs and metal war vests that warriors wore to protect themselves are also on display.

Nigerian National Museum Umuahia is a tourist site where people come from both far and near to see the war artifacts on display. The museum has three galleries that cover traditional warfare, the armed forces and the Nigerian Civil War weapons. Not only that, the Nigerian National Museum also kept weapons used during the pre – colonial civil disturbances, warfare materials used during communal and inter tribal wars and those of the Nigeria Civil War.

People come for visiting with different intentions. To some, its for research and educational purposes while to others, it is to remember the war period by seeing all the items. Some other visitors come just out of curiosity or sight seeing.

A part of the gallery section in the museum leads to the Nigerian Armed Forces gallery, the ceremonial uniforms of the army officers and pictures of the some past military leaders.
